Here come the girls

What about the girls, though?
There are currently more than 500,000 female bikers and the numbers are increasing every day. Women are using bikes as an alternative to their cars; using them to travel to work, go to the shops or just for the love of the ride. With the increase in female bikers on the road, there are more of them taking to the track, too.
Maria Costello and Jenny Tinmouth are two of the fastest women in the motorcycling world today, winning competition after competition and giving the boys a run for their money. Maria received an MBE for services to motorcycling and says she'd love to see more women riders.
For those who aren't quite ready for racing, though, the road still beckons. Many businesses are recognising the importance of female riders and are manufacturing safety clothing specifically for women. At the same time, insurance companies are mirroring the deals for car insurance and offering competitive rates, often cheaper than those for men.
Forums are also springing up all over the internet for women to learn more about biking, find out about meets, or just to chat to other women with similar interests.
There's a whole new world out there for women – and it comes with two wheels.
