Construction site deaths down
Published: 12:05PM BST 13 Jul 2010
The figures for the period 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010 reveal 41 construction workers were killed at work, compared to:
- 52 in 2008/09
- 72 in 2007/08
- 79 in 2006/07
Of the 41 who died, 29 were employees and 12 were self-employed.
Paul Morrison, Access Legal from Shoosmiths' head of mixed liability claims, said: "Some will say the falling numbers of fatal accidents are the result of improved health and safety; while others will argue they're down to fewer construction works being undertaken during the recession."
"Construction industry workers know just how dangerous building sites can be, and the high possibility of accidents at work."
"They face numerous hazards: falling materials; dangerous and defective machinery and power tools; falling from ladders; lifts; hoists and scaffolding; collapsing trenches, walls and foundations; plus simple things like slipping or tripping.
"They can all lead to serious personal injury."
Access Legal from Shoosmiths deals regularly with personal injury claims from workers who've been injured on building and construction sites.
