The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford has temporarily suspended paediatric heart surgery while it conducts an investigation into concerns raised following the deaths of four children during heart operations.

Whilst investigations are being carried out children awaiting urgent heart surgery are being transferred to other specialist cardiac units.

Access Legal from Shoosmiths solicitor and medical negligence specialist Phil Barnes said: "At this stage we don't know the circumstances under which the deaths occurred and what concerns are being investigated.

"The decision by the hospital to temporarily suspend surgery whilst it conducts an external review is a positive step. Patient safety must be the top priority."
