National Bicycle Week is chance for fun and safety awareness
Published: 10:19AM BST 16 Jun 2010
The profile of cycling is already being raised this year with extensive hire and cycle lane schemes in various towns and cities.
National Bicycle Week - from 19-27 June - will raise its profile even further, with events planned for all abilities, from experienced road cyclists, to families and the disabled.
Details of local events can be found in local media and through your local authority. The aim is to encourage people across the UK to give cycling a go and to cycle more.
National Bicycle Week is also closely linked to the cycle to work scheme, which offers employees the chance to buy a bike tax free; while the cycle to school campaign encourages children to take more exercise. These schemes can only serve to encourage interest in this 'green' and healthy form of transport.
The key to mass participation of cycling is to reassure people that cycling itself is safe. The majority of those seriously injured in cycling accidents tend to be blameless, and have been unfortunate to have been injured by somebody else's negligence.
Unlike other forms of transport, the safety risks to cyclists are evident by the number of those seriously and fatally injured each year.
Following previous media campaigns by Transport for London and the Department of Transport, asking all road users to think about and look twice for motorcycles, Access Legal from Shoosmiths has been promoting bicycle safety and increasing the awareness of cyclists among other road users.
We provide advice to those who suffer a personal injury as the result of a cycling accident.
