Since it began in Canada in 1984 IWMD has become recognised as a national day of remembrance and action for health and safety at work around the world.

It takes place around the world on 28 April every year.

Events range from services of remembrance and processions, to individuals showing their support by wearing purple 'forget-me-not' ribbons.

Access Legal from Shoosmiths associate and personal injury specialist Philip Baldwin said: "Despite having one of the best health and safety records in the world, there were still 180 workplace fatalities in the UK in 2008/09, and around 4,000 cancer deaths due to past asbestos exposure.

"Anything that helps raise awareness of workplace health and safety so that similar tragedies can be avoided in the future is a very positive step."

Announcing it to Parliament, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Yvette Cooper said she hoped official recognition would reinforce IWMD's significance and raise awareness of workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell each year by their work.
