Roofing company fined for causing asbestos exposure

Concept Roofing and Cladding, of Hampshire, has been fined £12,000 and ordered to pay £22,000 in costs following a prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The company had used a pressure washer to clean industrial roof tiles in Market Harborough, causing asbestos fibres to be released.
The HSE said the method of cleaning was wholly unsuitable and caused a number of business units to be closed for several weeks while the area was decontaminated at a cost of £500,000.
The asbestos had been released into 12 units and contaminated nearby walls, drains and bus stops, putting the public as well as the business units' tenants at risk.
If asbestos fibres are inhaled it can lead to the development of an asbestos related illness, although it can take many years for an asbestos disease to develop, sometimes as long as 50. However, not everyone exposed to asbestos will suffer from an asbestos related illness.
If someone is concerned they may have been exposed, they should seek medical advice from their GP.
