Speeding penalties
Published: 12:07PM BST 16 Dec 2010
With the proliferation of speed cameras on roads across the UK, these days, speeding is probably the most common of motoring offences.
So if you've been caught speeding, what sort of sentence can you expect?
It depends on a variety of factors, and the table below shows the starting point for your sentence.
The left hand column shows the speed limit where the offence took place. Then find the speed you were travelling at in one of the three right hand columns. The starting point for your sentence is then shown in the columns underneath.

The details for fines are displayed as a percentage, as the fine you get will be assessed as a percentage of your weekly income after tax and National Insurance.
If the following factors are present at the time of the offence you may get a harsher sentence:
- poor road or weather conditions
- driving for hire or reward
- towing caravan or heavy load
- carrying passengers or heavy load
- near a school
- high level of traffic or pedestrians nearby
Whilst these factors could reduce your sentence:
- genuine emergency – meaning more than simply late for work or a meeting
- entering a guilty plea
- disqualification could mean you losing your job
