Sports Grounds Safety Authority Bill: All sports fans to benefit from football's lessons

The Sports Grounds Safety Bill currently before Parliament aims to allow the experience and expertise acquired by the Football Licensing Authority (FLA) to be made available to other sports.

If the Bill becomes law it is suggested that the FLA be renamed the Sports Grounds Safety Authority.

It would be given an extended remit to provide safety advice on request to other sports bodies, including national or international organisations.

Football safety will remain the authority's core priority, though, and its licensing functions and local authority oversight duties will still cover football grounds only.

The proposed move means other sports are much less likely to suffer the sort of disasters that have hit football, such as Hillsborough in 1989, when 96 fans were killed and more than 750 injured.

It would also mean spectators at the London 2012 Olympic Games benefiting from the FLA's experience.
