Work related diseases

Work related diseases can be caused by exposure to chemicals, dust, and industrial noise and vibration.

Asbestos related diseases are probably the best known work related illness, but no matter what their cause, work related diseases can have serious long term consequences.  Typical occupational illnesses can include afflictions such as dermatitis, occupational asthma, vibration white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome, noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus or work related stress.   Being diagnosed with any of these afflictions can be a worrying time for sufferers and their families. We have lawyers who specialise in work related diseases who will take care of your legal needs and compensation, so at least you'll have one less thing to worry about.  Our free information guide about work related disease and illness claims will give you more information.

Your first considerations

If you are suffering or think you may have contracted a work related disease, seek medical advice immediately.  Discuss your symptoms with your GP and at the same time contact a specialist lawyer who is experienced in work related diseases.  There are time limits involved in bringing a claim, so speedy action may be required if you are to get the compensation you deserve to aid your recovery or help you deal with the problem long term.  You should also contact your local Job Centre Plus as there may be benefits available to you if you are suffering with a work related illness. If you are still working for the company where you contracted the disease and feel that your health continues to be put at risk, speak to your health and safety representative and if you get no joy there, you may want to contact the Health and Safety Executive directly.

Your employer's responsibilities

Your employer has a duty to protect your health and safety at work and there are many regulations setting out the steps they should be taking, including providing specific personal protective equipment where appropriate.  In particular, they have to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.  If they have failed in those duties to protect you in the workplace, you are perfectly entitled to bring a claim for compensation against them.  All employers should have insurances in place in any event to cover just such a situation.
