Vibration White Finger Compensation

Vibration White Finger is a common injury amongst industrial workers who frequently use power tools. If you have been affected, Access Legal's expert team can help you to make a compensation claim.

Vibration White Finger (VWF) mainly affects people who operate hand-held vibrating power tools such as chainsaws, angle grinders, hammers, impact wrenches, pneumatic drills, sanders, polishers, strimmers, lawnmowers, concrete breakers or tyre fitting equipment in the course of their work over a number of years. Vibrations from the power tools cause damage to the nerves and blood vessels in the fingers which accumulates and can become more severe over time.

What are the symptoms of vibration white finger?

VWF is a painful condition that's often worse in cold weather. Symptoms can differ greatly depending on the individual, but the most common are a tingling sensation or numbness in the fingertips, a cold sensation in the fingers or a discolouration of the skin where the fingertips or fingers can turn white, blue or red as well as general aches and pains in the hands, arms and fingers.

Some sufferers experience a 'pins and needles' tingling sensation in their fingers as well as a numbness or loss of feeling caused by nerve damage. Usually these symptoms are limited to the fingertips but in more serious cases they can extend up the whole length of the finger and arm (known as hand arm vibration syndrome). Smokers, diabetics and those taking prescription drugs such as beta blockers are all more susceptible to VWF.

Lasting effects of vibration white finger

Usually, the symptoms only last from between a few minutes to around an hour, but the damage caused can be permanent. In those extreme cases, sufferers may be left unable to do intricate work such as fastening buttons or gripping objects, which means they can no longer continue their employment.
